The annual series of summer concerts at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, is now well underway. A regular seasonal feature at the church since the 1890s, the concerts nowadays attract audiences from far and wide.

On Thursday, July 20, at 8 pm, St. Mary’s Church Choir will present their 2017 summer concert. Conducted by Mark Thompson, who has recently taken over the reins of the choir, the focal point of the concert is Antonio Vivaldi’s sunny and joyful ‘Gloria in D’, featuring soloists Angela and Marilyn Allen.

The programme also includes a selection of classic choral pieces from the likes of Bach, Mozart and Rutter. Organists Andrew Grace and John Harrison accompany the choir with a chamber orchestra formed especially for the occasion.

It promises to be a truly uplifting and entertaining evening. Admission is just £5 at the door.

On another note, 2019 will see the choir and organ celebrate 150 years of service to St. Mary’s Church. As well as singing at regular choral services, the choir has continued to provide special music for major church festivals, present concerts and contribute to a range of other events. They have sung on TV and radio, including appearances on ‘Songs of Praise’.

To mark this major milestone, several events are currently being planned alongside the production of a ‘scrapbook’ showcasing the history of musical activity at the church. They would be pleased to hear from former choristers who may have photographs, stories and memorabilia that may be useful in the preparation of this publication. “As well as looking backwards, we also have a responsibility to ensure the future of the musical life at St. Mary’s Church,” said a spokesperson. “We are always delighted to hear from any prospective new members.
