Pembrokeshire County Council’s highways department will be asked to look at the possibility of reducing the speed limit along New Hedges by-pass.

Reporting to a meeting of St. Mary Out Liberty Community Council (New Hedges) recently, county councillor for the ward Clr. Jon Preston said that he had been asked to seek information on the possibility of reducing the speed limit along the route which currently stands at 50 mph, which he said he would take up with PCC’s Highways department.

The road has seen a new layout introduced of late, with roadworks in place for several weeks as work took place on introducing the new Active Travel Policy scheme.

Funding from a £1.2 million ‘Active Travel’ grant from the Welsh Government, meant that cycling and walking in Pembrokeshire has received a boost, thanks to the successful grant application by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Active Travel means walking and cycling (including the use of mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs) for everyday journeys, such as going to work or the shops, or to access services.

The grant has been used to develop new traffic-free paths, improve existing routes and create better connections between networks across the county.

Work on the new footpath by New Hedges continues along the top of Broadfield Hill.

“Despite some initial problems during the early phase of the project which has been funded by Welsh Government under its Active Travel Policy for both walking and cycling investments, local feedback has been largely positive,” said Clr. Preston.

“With the support of the cabinet member for infrastructure Clr. Phil Baker we have been successful in addressing some individual matters that have been raised with me during the construction of the new by-pass.

“Clr. Baker and I remain available to anyone who may wish to raise any further matters or concerns,” he added.
