A book celebrating a ‘100 Years of Tenby Carnival’ was officially launched last Friday at the town’s Museum and Art Gallery.
The new book that was recently revealed by local firefighter Lee Simmons looks back at the history of one of Tenby’s most popular events.
Community fire safety officer Lee played a huge role in the putting the publication together, after an idea sparked during the 2016 carnival, and he began researching the archives for photos and information about the seaside resort’s long standing carnival traditions.
“When I identified a centenary in 2019, with the support of my colleagues we decided to put this book together,” he said.
“The purpose of that book was to highlight, promote, thank and show the locals of Tenby who have supported this way back to 1919, the importance of how much of a commitment they have made to take part or watch the event - rain or shine.”
Lee then went back to the fire station where it was agreed that the monies received from the book sales would be donated to the Firefighters charity.
He then put an appeal out for photos from the past, which sure enough people started sending in.
“The book is another way of giving something back to the community, and highlights the support and shows the amount of work and effort put into carnivals down the years, and the amount of people that help us out annually.
“Without the support of the local families this carnival wouldn’t still be going 100 years later!”
The book was officially launched following another successful firefighters carnival for the town on August 7, which marked the event’s 100 anniversary.
The week- long celebrations also saw a special charity screening of the film Backdraft at Tenby Fire Station, as well as the open day.
Unfortunately, a concert scheduled for Thursday evening down the harbour where Tenby Male Choir were lined-up to perform, was cancelled due to the poor weather.
The book costs £6.75 and is available at Tenby Bookshop on Tudor Square with proceeds going towards the firefighters charity.
