In normal circumstances the Summer events, run by Saundersfoot Rotary Club, which include duck races in Saundersfoot Harbour and the Pig Roast and Barbecue on the harbour decking, would be in full swing by now.
The club have sadly decided to cancel the events this year. They are popular, both with visitors and residents, but the COVID-19 guidelines and regulations have prevented their going ahead. You can see from the photographs that the ducks are miserable, having to make do with floating on a lily pond, and the signs used to advertise the Pig Roast have been temporarily overwritten with ‘who knows when’ replacing the date and time!
Support for these events help Saundersfoot Rotary Club raise funds which are donated to local charities and worthy causes.
The club would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who normally attends these events for their past support.
All being well, they will be run next summer and once again you can enjoy watching club members wading in the harbour, chasing ducks before they reach the open seas, or see them sweating, whilst standing over the hot barbecue, serving the pig rolls and burgers.
However, the club haven’t been idle.
Vice-president, John Walker-Smith, has been busy collecting items for donation to the Pembrokeshire Foodbank, Narberth. With contributions from club members and supporters, John was able to make a large delivery to the foodbank last week totalling 126 items in 14 bags of shopping, with a combined weight of over 60 kg.
The pandemic is causing increasing difficulties for many: foodbanks offer a means of support which can ensure families and vulnerable people don’t go without.
As a result, the club have decided to repeat the donation of food and household essentials, with a planned collection taking place week commencing August 24.
Members will obviously help John with donations and we would be happy to collect contributions from any member of the public so that we can continue to provide this lifeline for many people.
If you can help, please contact club secretary, Brian Waters, on 01834 813665, and a club member will be in touch to collect your donation.
The club is always working hard in the community, helping others, and if you want to know more, please ask Brian.
