It is with great sadness, the family of Rev’d Fr Michael William Burke, announces his death on September 25, 2022, in Altamonte Springs, Florida, at the age of 65 years.
Mickie was educated at Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School and at Haverfordwest Grammar School before gaining a degree in Maths from Imperial College London. From here Mick went to Rome to commence his training to become a priest at the English and Welsh College studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he graduated with PhB, STB, JCB and JCL.
Mick was ordained deacon on July 31, 1983 in St Mary’s Church, Rhyl by Archbishop John Aloysius Ward and ordained Priest on July 28, 1984 at SS David & Patrick Church, Haverfordwest by Bishop James Hannigan.
Mick was appointed assistant priest to Clyde Johnson at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Llanelli (1985-88) and then Parish priest of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Burry Port (1988-1995), Our Lady of the Assumption, Briton Ferry (1995-2001) and Sacred Heart, Morriston (2001-2011). He was Cathedral Dean at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Swansea (2011-2015) and parish priest of Clydach & Ystradgynlais (2015-2016). From here Mick became Assistant Pastor of St Mary Magdalene, Altamonte Springs, Florida to Fr Charlie Mitchell from 2016 until his death.
Mick was appointed to the Menevia Diocesan Tribunal in 1985, the Cardiff Inter-Diocesan Tribunal in 1987, the National Tribunal of Wales in 2007 serving as Vice-Officialis and judge, and the Diocese of Orlando Tribunal in 2016 serving as Judge.
Mick was a great fan of all things Disney and was a Disney pass holder. He loved the theatre, particularly musicals, films and jigsaws.
Mick was the only son of the late Michael and June Burke and will be lovingly remembered by his sister Julie Conybeare, his nephew, Dominic Conybeare, his niece, Lucia Thomas and his great nieces Leah, Leila and Lily, Julie’s husband Mark, Dominic’s wife Margaret and Lucia’s husband Ben. Mick’s Westie Dog has been adopted in Florida by a parishioner.
Requiem Masses took place at St Mary Magdalene Church, Altamonte Springs on October 4; St Joseph’s Cathedral, Swansea on October 14; and SS David and Patrick Church on October 15, followed by interment at City Road next to his mum and dad.
