Local councillors are considering a proposal to rename one of the gardens overlooking the harbour in honour of the Queen to commemorate her 90th birthday.

A suggestion had been made at a previous meeting by Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter that the Crackwell Gardens should be renamed Queen Elizabeth II Gardens to mark Her Majesty’s birthday.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting, the town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, told members that he had posted the proposal on social network, but the idea had received a lot of “negative” feedback.

Clr. Will Rossiter said that he, too, would question the wisdom of naming this garden after the Queen as it was a facility that looked a bit “tatty”.

“If we open this up to suggestions from the whole town, then we’re never going to agree on a name, so I think we should make a decision ourselves,” commented Clr. Mrs. Rossiter.

Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, suggested that a sub-committee be formed so that plans to mark the Queen’s 90th could be put in place. Other ideas afoot to mark the occasion is a beacon lighting ceremony on Castle Hill, whilst St Mary’s Church were organising a special ‘Queen’s Birthday’ flower festival.
