He collects and delivers mail six days a week - even in the snow - but now it's time to celebrate the unsung fund-raising work of postie Andrew Jenkins from Narberth.

From almost 100 entries from Royal Mail customers and managers throughout Wales, judges chose Andrew as one of nine shortlisted postmen and women who 'go the extra mile' in the communities where they live and work.

Andrew, 33, a postman for 13 years, runs a disco in his spare time and every year he provides music free of charge at the annual Narberth Carnival. He also competed in the Cardiff Half Marathon for charity last year and dresses as Santa in the annual Llandissilio Santa Run to raise money for various local charities

"I deliver in Narberth town centre and all my customers have sponsored me and supported me in my fund-raising efforts over the years," he said. To date, Andrew has raised nearly £2,000.

Huw Roberts, Director of Welsh Affairs, Royal Mail Group, said: "People like Andrew are the unsung heroes who get involved in the community. They are the people who customers and Royal Mail feel deserve some extra recognition and appreciation for their efforts."

Andrew receives £100 shortlist prize money and goes through to the Welsh final with £500 in prize money at stake.

The national final in London at the end of March 2009 will reveal the overall UK Postman or Woman of the Year 2009.
