There is no Plan B, campaigners to save Narberth Swimming Pool from closure have been told this week. Unless the Friends of Narberth Pool are able to raise sufficient funds to purchase a biomass boiler and make other energy improvements, Pembrokeshire County Council will be closing the facility as of a week today (Friday, August 1). Speaking at Sunday's civic luncheon, Mayor and chairman of the Friends of Narberth Pool, Clr. Mrs. Sue Rees, who has chosen the pool as her charity of the year, made a passionate plea for funds before July 31. "Please support our community venuture and give as generously as you can," she said. "Pembrokeshire County Council have been losing more than £100,000 per year over several years," she continued. "We believe that we can do better with energy improvements and Government incentives. We also have plans to develop the pool for the future with a Lottery grant." There are three options for supporting the pool; you can donate or pledge a donation to the Friends of Narberth Pool, and if you are a tax payer, the fund will benefit from an extra 25 per cent gift aid, or if you run a business, you can deem it sponsorship and claim tax back on your business account, alternatively, if you prefer to invest in shares, you can take part in the share offer. "Our fund stands at almost £40,000 - please help us to achieve our target of £200,000 by the end of July." Anyone who would like further information about pledging financial support is asked to visit http://www.swimnarberth.co.uk">www.swimnarberth.co.uk or telephone secretary John Sleigh on (01834) 860014. STOP PRESS: It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce that the Prince's Gate Water Trust has agreed a major sponsorship package for Narberth pool, contributing a total of £36,000 towards the running costs for the first three years of operation. This has been an integral part of the business plan since it was developed in January. Said Clr. Mrs. Rees: "Despite this very generous offer, we still need to achieve our target of £200,000 to be able to purchase the equipment needed to make Narberth Swimming Pool viable and sustainable for the next 20 years. Without that funding we will be unable to proceed and the pool will have to close."
