TWO Welsh sisters who moved to California when they were infants and are walking the 870 mile Wales Coast Path for charity in memory of their grandmother have reached Pembrokeshire.
Rachael and Hayley Williams who are now 29 and 27-years old are at the halfway point of their journey.
So far, they’ve walked along the north Wales coast, around Anglesey and the Llyn Peninsula and down Cardigan Bay to Poppit Sands.
During the walk – which began on 15 June, they’re raising money for the older people’s charity Age Cymru.
They’re also hoping to reconnect with their Welsh heritage and visit historic and cultural sites on the way.
“Our paternal grandmother Jean Williams lived in Cardiff so when we came over for her funeral in 2008, we felt our connection with Wales was starting to slip away”, explains Rachael Williams.
“We decided we wanted to do something to re-connect with Wales and so we came up with the idea of walking the 870 mile Wales Coast Path”.
Rachael and Hayley are camping, staying in hostels and with some of their family members, including their maternal grandparents in south Wales.
“We’re both looking forward to spending time with our grandparents Geoff and Valerie Richards”, adds Hayley Williams.
“We don’t often get the chance to see them and we would like to be able to do more to look after them, but we can’t do as much as we’d like because we live on the other side of the world.”
“This is why we’ve decided to raise funds for Age Cymru during our walk because of the work it does to improve the lives of older people in Wales.”
