Pembrokeshire Hogspital is a non profit organisation which rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs, returning them to the wild in most cases.

All donations made to the organisation go to helping the hedgehogs.

Last October, Pembrokeshire Hogspital volunteer Penny Brace set up a hedgehog food collection point. The public responded well and Penny expresses many thanks to locals who have donated food and dropped off at her collection box over the last nine months.

Nearly all of the hibernating hedgehogs have been released happily and healthier to their new homes. There are just a few sleepy ones remaining enjoying their B&B!

Pembrokeshire Hogspital now faces a busy time cleaning out the winter accommodation ready for the next intake of abandoned and/or injured hedgehogs.

A number of hedgehogs have already been admitted recently with injuries caused by traffic, animal bites, strimmers and even being trapped in something.

During a recent Under 16s girls football training session at Kilgetty AFC, Kingsmoor Sports Field, the whistle was blown on the training as a little hedgehog came running across the pitch!

Coaches Lukas Gamble and Sharron Hardwick and the Under 16s girls got water, a box and a bowl to keep the hedgehog safe.

Lukas and his wife Emma called Pembrokeshire Hogspital who took in the little hedgehog in and gave him top treatment and care.

“Hedgehogs have been added to the Red List for British Mammals as ‘vulnerable to extinction’. This is shocking news. If you find a listless hedgehog out in the day, gently pick him up and put in a high-sided box. Phone Ginny on 07974 681659 or Russ on 07974 866040,” advises Penny, who has been supporting Pembrokeshire Hogspital for almost a year.

Donations are still very much in need.

Suitable food for hedgehogs such as cat and dog meat and biscuits can be dropped off at 1 Hawthorn Close, Pentlepoir, or phone Penny on 01834 811515.
