Oyez! Oyez! Tenby’s vacant town crier role has been filled.

Seventy-year-old Jim Cornwell’s first official engagement in his new position as town crier was assisting the Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, to start proceedings at the RNLI’s annual charity pancake race in Tudor Square on Tuesday.

In addition to being town crier, Jim is also a National Trust guide at the resort’s Tudor Merchant’s House, and a volunteer helper with the De Valence Trust.

A former chairman of the British Ramblers Association and the Chartered Building Societies Institute, Jim was involved with several amateur operatic and drama groups where he previously lived, and since retiring to Tenby has also become involved with several other organisations and clubs in the town, including the Civic Society, Tenby Museum, Tenby Male Choir, Tenby Bowling Club, and St. Mary’s Church.

He takes over from Teifion Powell in the role, who had a brief stint as town crier, following the passing of John ‘Yobbler’ Thomas in 2011, who served as Tenby’s town crier for more than 30 years.
