Animal rescue charity Greenacres have described 2018 as a “wonderful but difficult year.” it saw them celebrate their 10th Anniversary, achieve and action planning permission for expansion, gain charity status, complete another year of being the stray dog kennels for Pembrokeshire and commit to every dog that was not claimed by an owner, regardless of age, breed or medical need. They were even featured on BBC Wales television programme Give a Dog a Home!

In 2018 Greenacres helped over 2,000 animals, including reuniting 52 dogs with their owners.

The charity found homes for 301 dogs, 193 cats and a whole host of other animals from smallest of hamsters to the largest of horses. They continued to provide a sanctuary and lifelong home and support to larger and farm animals to secure happy, long lives.

Interestingly the number of cats needing help (and in particular kittens) was reduced in 2018 compared with previous years, probably as a result of an excellent subsidised neutering scheme operated locally by Cats Protection.

Greenacres helped to find rescue placements for over 500 animals with their rescue contacts and breed specific organisations whose ethics match their own.

None of this would be possible without a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and supporters, including several local companies.

For 2019, Greenacres have some exciting things planned, the first being the imminent relocation of their Pembroke Dock Charity Shop to new premises in Dimond Street.

The only sadness, looking back at 2018, the ‘Year of the Lurcher’ is that one lovely lurcher has yet to find a forever home. Winston (pictured), a two year old brindle lurcher, is described us “delightful, friendly, attentive, beautiful to look at and a beautiful nature.”

“It’s so sad for us here at the centre, as we know the dogs so well, but we cannot convince adopters how amazing Winston is! He would be perfect for any sighthound lover, he loves to run but loves to sleep, he is good with other dogs but would need a cat free home.”
