MR. B. E. MASON

NARBERTH

As reported previously, the death occured peacefully at Ridgeway Care Home, Llawhaden, on Sunday, December 4, of Mr. Benjamin Ellis Mason, affectionately known as Ellis, of Station Road, Narberth. He was 86.

A native of Narberth, Ellis was born in Cox Hill on June 12, 1930, to the late Albert and Sarah Mason. The family moved to Sodston Manor, but in the early ’40s they had to vacate the manor as it was commandeered by the Army and the family had to move to Cold Blow.

Ellis was one of 11 children and attended Templeton School. It was at school that he met Valerie, his wife of 65 years.

Ellis left school at 14 and started his working life at Carr Garage in Narberth (where the Post Office vans are kept now in Spring Gardens). He moved to Bowen’s, Llawhaden, and got an apprenticeship; this is where his extensive knowledge of motor bike engines began.

He later moved to Greens and from there he moved to Alfie Arnold’s just across the road. Alfie retired, so Ellis, with Valerie’s backing, started Mason Motorcycles. He rented one of the zinc sheds in Quay Street, Haverfordwest opposite the Bristol Trader, (where parking spaces are now). In 1970, Ellis moved to new premises in Fountain Row off Barn Street and became the local main dealer for Yamaha and then BMW as well. His knowledge and reputation was such that people from all over the UK would write to him saying they had difficulty in getting cables for their old or new bikes and he would make cables for them from scratch. He closed the doors of Mason Motorcycles for retirement in 2002 after trading for 40 years.

In Ellis’s late teens and early 20s he used to take part in local scrambles and became an ACU steward for the South West Wales Scramble Club. He also raced on Pendine Sands, beating the top racer at that time, Fred Wrist, in the one mile sprint race. Then in later life, for many years took part in the Saundersfoot Vintage Run and various vintage shows, often winning his category. He spent many a happy day going to bike shows and bike jumbles with his dear friends, travelling as far as Birmingham.

Ellis also enjoyed caravanning in Aberaeron, gardening, cooking and he had a love of most music, especially Country and Western.

Unfortunately, due to ill health, Ellis resided at Ridgeway Nursing Home for just under the last three-and-a-half years.

As well as his wife Valerie, family left to mourn are Philip and Margaret Mason, Brian and Gwenda Mason (brothers and sisters -in-law), Bronwen and Alfie Scourfield, Audrey and Peter Thomas (sisters and brothers-in-law), numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Ken, Vernon, Dennis and Dan Mason and sisters Rhianon Evans and Betty Morris.

The funeral service took place on Thursday, December 15, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

Officiating was the Rev. Huw George, while bearers were Gareth Mason, Lee Mason, Kevin Thomas, Anthony Evans, James Davies and Phil Thomas (nephews).

Donations in lieu of flowers, if so desired, may be made to Cancer Research UK, c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who conducted the funeral arrangements.

DEBORAH (DEBBIE) JANE HIGHT

Her many friends were greatly saddened by the sudden death of Deborah (Debbie) Jane Hight in the USA on January 17.

Born in Solihull in 1946, she worked as a secretary at Imperial College, London, and later at Cambridge University. It was here that she met her American husband Joel Gottesfeld and together they moved to San Diego, California, where their daughter Emily was born. She was also persuaded by Francis Crick, the discoverer of DNA, to become his secretary.

In 1991, Debbie and Emily moved to Bend, Oregon, where purchase of a small ranch allowed them to pursue their love of horses. Debbie qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist and a great many patients’ lives were improved and enriched by her treatments.

A number of years, later Debbie renewed her acquaintance with Dr. David Hight, who she first met during her time at Imperial College, and they married in May 2009. They lived in Grayshott before moving to East Williamston in 2012.

They made many new friends locally and Debbie threw herself wholeheartedly into village life. She served on the committee of East Williamston Community and Hall Association and helped to organise many functions. She joined the Friends of Jubilee Park, volunteers who help to maintain this popular area of nature trail and woodland, and was instrumental in raising significant funds towards buying additional land for it. A great animal lover, she also concerned herself with animal charities and their work.

Debbie had a warm-hearted and generous nature and endeared herself to all she met by her kindness and thoughtfulness. She continued to visit the USA to spend time with her daughter, her horses and her many American friends.

Debbie leaves to mourn her husband David and daughter Emily, as well as members of her extended family. A cremation will soon take place in USA, with a small private ceremony, to be followed by an open-air service there in the spring for her many friends to celebrate her life. Once this has been held, there will also be a similar gathering locally.

Those wishing to be contacted in due course about the latter. may send their details to [email protected]. They will also have a future opportunity to make a donation in lieu of flowers, to be used for charitable purposes to benefit the community.

MRS. A. M. RICHARDS

PENALLY

Auriol was born in and spent all her life in Penally. In fact she was a true ‘Penally Crow’. She went to Penally Village School, before going on to Greenhill Grammar School, where she studied secretarial skills.

All her working life was spent with the Electricity Board in the old Shanleys building on the South Beach. She was very talented musically and could play almost anything by ear, from hymns in the chapel, to Winifred Attewell in Penally Abbey on New Year’s Eve where she was always in demand for gatherings around the piano.

She and Paul got married in 1960, and she continued working until the arrival of Ian in 1964. She then devoted her life to looking after her home.

She was a stalwart of the village life. For 38 years she was clerk to the parish council, which is now the community council. Only when the computer age set in did she hand over the reins. However, if a problem arose, Auriol could always be relied on for the relevant information.

She was also caretaker of the village hall for many years. After retiring as clerk, Auriol then became a member of the community council. She was often in the background doing her bit at village events.

Auriol loved her garden, and was well known for her fuchsia collection. She would often have compliments from passers-by, both local and holidaymakers. Her other hobbies were knitting dolls and card-making. She raised a lot of money for charity, mainly Breast Care Wales, and the Chemotherapy Day Unit, Ward 10, at Withybush Hospital, where she received such wonderful care.

Over the last few years, Paul and Auriol enjoyed many coach tour holidays, travelling from Scotland to Italy, making many new friends.

Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, was full to capacity on Thursday, January 26, for the funeral. This showed the love and respect that so many people had for Auriol.

Family flowers were from Paul, Ian and Beverley, Pauline and Greg, Ron and Bron, Trudy and the seven grandchildren.

Donations, if so desired, are for Breast Care Wales or the Chemotherapy Day Unit, Ward 10, at Withybush, c/o funeral directors, Messrs. W. and M. J. Rositer and Sons, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, also at Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

MRS. E. J. WATERS

TENBY

As previously reported, the death occurred on January 16, at Park House Court Nursing Home, of Esther Jane (Hettie) Waters, formerly of Moorings, North Cliff, Tenby. She was aged 94.

Hettie was born, one of eight children, in Narberth. Her father Robert (Bob) Pickersgill came from a Yorkshire farming family and met her mother, Elizabeth Jones, while tree-felling in Dolgellau.

In 1942, Hettie married William Ebsworth Waters, who was known throughout his life as Ebbie, and predeceased her in 2001. Ebbie and Hettie started married life at The Croft in Kilgetty, where in 1945 their son, David, was born. They moved to Tenby in 1948, living successively at Serpentine Road, Heywood Lane and then, finally in 1967, they moved to North Cliff.

Hettie played a full part in supporting Ebbie who, together with his cousin, Wyndam Evans, in 1948 opened The Car Exchange in St. Mary’s Street and St. George’s Street. That business had thrived for 20 years, when Ebbie decided to develop a farm he owned in Amroth as a holiday caravan park. This, as it turned out, required Hettie to play a full-time role and her support ensured its success.

Hettie was a life-long member and supporter of St. Johns Church; her sponges and Welsh-cakes being in great demand at church fêtes.

She was also a keen member of the Saundersfoot Inner Wheel and Dr. Barnardos, to whom she always gave unstinting support. In their retirement, Ebbie and Hetty were able to indulge their passion for horse-racing and must have visited most of the courses in England and Wales.

Following Ebbie’s death, Hettie indulged her love of her garden and even when, in recent years, she was unable to play an active role, she took great pleasure in watching the seasons come and go from her strategically placed chair.

The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head on Wednesday, January 25, at St. Johns. A poem was read by Mr. Anthony Bowen and the eulogy was given by Mr. Philip Evans. Fond memories were also read from Hettie’s grandchildren Katie and Lucy who, together with her five grandchildren, live in Australia and New Zealand, respectively.

The principal mourners were David and Sonia (son and daughter-in-law), Ann Mason (sister), Alfred and Phylis Pickersgill (brother and sister-in-law) and Hazel Pickersgill (sister-in-law), who provided great support to Hettie in her final years.

Dilys (sister) and Haydn (brother) were unable to attend owing to illness.

Donations in lieu of flowers may, if desired, be made payable to RNLI (Tenby), c/o W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who carried out the funeral arrangements.
