Mrs. E. M. James
Cosheston
Mrs. Elsie May James passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Thursday, June 23, at Hollyland Lodge Residential Care Home, Pembroke, surrounded by her family.
Elsie was born in Norwich, Norfolk, to Arthur and Hilda Cooke and had one sister, Ethel. After leaving school, Elsie went into service and whilst working in Brighton met a young soldier, Harry James who was based there. They fell in love and Elsie came home to Cosheston with Harry and they were married in St. Michael and All Angels Church, Cosheston, in March 1940.
They had three children, John (now deceased), Basil and June who all married and between them provided them with five granddaughters and two grandsons. The grandchildren in turn provided Elsie with eight great-grandsons, four great-granddaughters and one great-great-grandson. Harry died in 1992 and her children and grandchildren were a great comfort to her and she liked nothing better than being surrounded by her family and hearing their news.
Elsie was a hard worker who could pick potatoes with the best of them, as well as running the family home at Woodfield Grove, Cosheston. Her last occupation before she retired was part-time post woman for Cosheston and she would walk miles whilst delivering the post. Life was hard, but Elsie never complained.
Elsie was a member of Cosheston WI and a regular attender at St. Michael’s Church before suffering a stroke at the age of 89. Following months in hospital, she moved to Hollyland Lodge where she was cared for by a very caring team of staff, who couldn’t have done more for her. She enjoyed a regular stream of visitors, both family and friends who were always welcomed by the staff.
Elsie lived a very long, and for the most part, a happy life, surrounded by family and friends in a village she loved. She is now at peace and reunited with Harry and John.
St. Michael’s Church was packed to capacity on Saturday, July 2, to say goodbye to Elsie and to celebrate her long life, prior to cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.
The service was conducted by Rev. Carolyn Wood, with Rev. Norman Gilbert, a family friend reading the Bible reading and giving the Eulogy on behalf of the family.
The bearers were Matthew and Nicholas James (grandsons), Christopher Jermyn (great-grandson) and Neil Batchelor (granddaughter’s partner).
