Local businessman and International Clay Target Shooting personality, Mr Neville Pryce-Jones of County Sports, Haverfordwest passed away peacefully at his home on October 9th aged 87.

Neville was born in Brecon on October 8th, 1931 and brought up in St Fagans during the war. He moved to Pembrokeshire with his parents to farm at Mounton near Crosshands in the 1950s.

He went to South Wales Baptist College, Cardiff from 1956-9 and on completion of his degree, had a call to Beulah English Baptist Church but he didn’t feel it was right for him at the time.

He married Mavis on October 22nd, 1960 at Bethesda Baptist Church, Narberth and they settled in a bungalow in Kilgetty. At that time, he was working in the motor trade for Rootes but shortly after Neville trained as a teacher in Trinity College, Carmarthen and taught English and History at Narberth Grammar School.

Neville and Mavis then made their home at Guys Villas, Saundersfoot where their daughter Heidi was born in 1963. Neville developed a keen interest in shooting and set up a clay target shooting ground at Templeton airfield and sold shotguns and cartridges from their home trading as County Shooting Supplies.

In 1965 Neville and Mavis made the brave decision to purchase 3 Old Bridge, Haverfordwest to expand County Shooting Supplies and open a gunsmith and workshop. Over the next few years they began to stock fishing tackle, country sports equipment and later expanded to include most sports and water sports.

County Sports has been a prominent part of Haverfordwest for over 50 years through Neville’s and Mavis’ loving leadership and the many comments by the staff and customers are testament to this. Through Neville’s passions of shooting and fishing, he had many wonderful experiences.

As one of Great Britain’s top clay target shooting personalities, he ran an International Shooting ground at Deep Lake, Haverfordwest, and was the founder member of the Pistol Club which was initially based at the Drill Hall, Haverfordwest.

Neville’s competitive shooting and subsequent managerial roles and technical duties took him all over the world. For many years, he was Great Britain’s Shooting Team Manager for the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games, was also a long-standing International Clay Target Shooting Judge and was the President of the British International Clay Target Shooting Federation and Chairman of the European Shooting Federation.

Neville loved to organise annual Fishing Tackle Shows which were held at the beginning of the Fishing Season. These shows were so popular, fishermen would travel hundreds of miles to attend.

County Sports is still going strong and, it is without doubt due to the wealth of knowledge and experience Neville has passed on over the years.

Although Neville didn’t join the Baptist ministry full time, he frequently ministered throughout the county and regularly at Gilgal Baptist Church, Pembroke Dock. Many individuals and families are indebted to Neville for his loving pastoral care through good times and, also, the bad. Neville also gave invaluable guidance when Gilgal amalgamated with Bethany Baptist Church and members remember him with much gratitude.

He was a valued member and Deacon of Bethesda Baptist Church, Haverfordwest where his funeral took place on Friday October 19th. The service was officiated by Rev. Terry Broadhurst with readings by Pam Milner and Rev. Aled Jenkins and the organist was Sheila Williams. The bearers were Jack Tree, Philip Wellman, Trevor Harwood and Nick Turner. The service of thanksgiving was followed by burial at Molleston Baptist Church.

Neville will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Mavis, daughter and son- in-law, Heidi and Gary Lewis and grandson, Aaron Pryce-Lewis. The large number of cards and heartfelt messages received by the family were testament to the high regard and respect in which Neville was held.

Donations for Diabetes UK may be sent to Mr Glan Phillips, Bryn -y-Fran, Crowhill, Haverfordwest, SA61 2HL.

MRS. E. M. DAVIES (ENA) MBE

PEMBROKE DOCK

After a brief acute illness, Ena passed away at Withybush Hospital, Haverforwest on Sunday, September 30th. She was aged 86 and died with her daughter Denise by her side.

Born Ena Mary Lovering in Swansea on December 13th, 1931 she moved to Pembroke Dock in August 1940 aged 8 years.

Educated at the Coronation School until the age of 14 years, she then began work in Woolworths, Pembroke Dock, rising to the position of Department Manager before her marriage to Ken Davies on February 6th, 1954.

Following her marriage, Ena dedicated herself to her family alongside her love of charity work. She continued her charity work for nearly 50 years – running a Friday market stall for much of that time, alongside selling raffle tickets and organising numerous charity functions. Every penny of her fundraising went to local causes within Pembrokeshire – buying much needed hospital and community nurse equipment. Ena’s life of charity work was recognised by the Queens Honours list on June 16th, 1984 when she was awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) medal - presented at Buckingham Palace by HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

Secondly, she volunteered to set up and run the local Scout and Guide Association ‘Rangers’ group for many years. She also opened their home to tourists for Bed and Breakfast and lodgers for longer stays - with many people returning year on year.

Ena lived very happily in Pembroke Dock for most of her life. The couple did though accept the exciting opportunities of two overseas postings linked to Ken’s career in the Milford Haven Ministry of Defence (MOD) Mining Depot.

They lived in Mombasa, Kenya for three years, (where their son Andrew was born); and later spent a further three years in Sliema, Malta (where their daughter Denise was born). As well as these overseas postings, the couple particularly enjoyed making holiday trips – taking numerous cruises as well as travelling within Great Britain and abroad.

Ena was a positive, energetic and generous lady. She loved all her family but her deep love for her husband left her very saddened after Ken died. Ena and Ken Davies enjoyed 61 years of very happy marriage before Ken’s death on February 11th, 2015. She leaves a big hole in the lives of her family and close friends – she will be hugely missed. She leaves to mourn: Naomi and Andrew, Denise and Ian (children and partners); Sarah and Alicia, Danielle, Jessica and Gary, Duncan (grandchildren and partners); Oliver, Brady-James and Scarlett (great grandchildren), as well as numerous very close friends and extended family.

The service was conducted by the Reverend Colin Everett who gave a very special tribute to Ena’s life.

The service was followed by a gathering at the Cricket Club, Pembroke Dock for refreshments.

Unable to attend the funeral were: Barbara Lovering and Ken, Bernadette and Brian Coppen and Auriol and Robert Griffiths.

There were family flowers only but, with donations in lieu if desired, for Combat Stress. These should go to the funeral directors E.C Thomas and Son, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narbeth.

The family wish to particularly thank Graham Thomas for his very considerate support throughout all the arrangements.
