MRS. HAZEL MAUREEN DAVIES
(née Scourfield)
BERKSHIRE
Hazel Maureen Davies (née Scourfield) has died peacefully, surrounded by her family, in Bracknell, Berkshire, at the age of 73.
She was the youngest of seven children of Hubert and Amy Scourfield, of Manorbier. She attended Manorbier Primary School, then Greenhill Grammar School, Tenby. On leaving school she worked as a secretary at the School of Artillery in Manorbier. She was a member of the Red Cross and became a life-long blood donor.
Mo, as she came to be called, was a member of Penuel Baptist Chapel, where she became a Christian and was baptised in her early teens. This was to be a defining moment in her life. She met Ben Davies, from Prendergast, Haverfordwest, at a South Pembrokeshire Young Baptists Association weekend at Cilgwyn Conference Centre in Newcastle Emlyn in 1961. They were married in Manorbier in August 1964 and moved to Bracknell where Ben, newly qualified from Spurgeons College, London, became the minister at Bracknell Baptist Church. Mo and Ben led the church for 43 years, overseeing three church building programmes, including a 1000-seater facility. They had an international ministry, travelling to four of the five continents. On a visit to Zambia, where her brother had previously lived, she set up a fund to build a classroom for special needs children, which was opened just before her death. Mo was involved in many aspects of church life, especially with adults and children with special needs. She also worked in the church’s Foodbank for many years, until just weeks before her death.
For 18 years Mo was a Marie Curie nurse.
Mo enjoyed running, and in later life completed 10K runs. She cycled across France many times and skied regularly. She white water rafted down the Zambezi River.
Mo leaves three children, Naomi, married to Howard, Caradog, married to Anja, and Rebekah, married to Simon, together with 11 grandchildren, Zachary, Jotham, Damaris, Ieuan, Angharad, Tegan, Myfanwy, Silas, Indigo, Ruby and Delilah. Mo was devoted to her children and grandchildren.
Mo also leaves two brothers, Keith Scourfield of Princes Gate and David Scourfield of Bath, together with their respective wives, Janet and Dot.
In 2010 Mo was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Her strong faith in God enabled her to live a very full life, in spite of bouts of treatment. She constantly said “God is in charge” and faced her health challenges without fear. She never complained and kept her life-long good sense of humour. Throughout her life she was a rock for family and friends. She was passionately Welsh in an English environment and during the rugby Six Nations when it came to England she ‘took no prisoners’. One of her final photographs was taken at Royal Ascot as she sat in a wheelchair with a Welsh flag draped across her body.
Mo lived and died in the certainty of the resurrection to eternal life. Her gain is our pain.
A service celebrating Mo’s life will be held at the Kerith Centre, Bracknell on Wednesday, August 30, at 1.00 pm. Donations, if desired, to Marie Curie may be made via www.abwalker.co.uk. Enquiries to A. B. Walker & Son. Tel: 01344 303707.
