Last Saturday night, the great and the good of Saundersfoot gathered to help celebrate the 30th birthday of their favourite son - Charlie Shivers - the infamous New Year's Day mascot. The swim celebrated its 30 th anniversary on January 1, and to mark the special milestone, Saundersfoot Festivities, organisers of the swim, arranged for a birthday celebration at a packed Regency Hall. Over the 30 year period, the swim has raised nearly £500,000, this year alone achieving £38,500. A variety of sponsors, helpers, emergency personnel and swimmers were invited and were thoroughly entertained by Tuxedo Funktion. The band, made up of current and former members of Greenhill School, packed the dance floor and their performance prompted repeated encores. The night was opened brilliantly by 'Butch', a familiar face amongst the pubs in Saundersfoot on New Year's Day. He was later supported by Wally Marr with an unforgettable duet of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' During the evening, Martyn Williams, chairman of Saundersfoot Festivities, thanked the many generous sponsors, organisations, helpers and swimmers, without whom the swim could not take place. Martyn Williams presented flowers to Claire Phillips (nee Parry) who, as a 14-year-old pupil of Pembroke School, designed 'Charlie Shivers'. Little did she realise that years later he'd be brought to life! Saundersfoot Festivities would also like to thank the Regency Hall for hosting the event, Roger Stanford and his staff at the sports club and Callum McLean for the photos.
