Ex-pupils from Pembroke Dock’s Llanion CP School had some catching up to do when they held a reunion in the town last weekend.
Taking place at The Cove in Llanion, former pupils of the school, Elizabeth Greenslade (nee Owen), Julie Taylor (nee Spicer), Maggie Heginbothom (nee Shapcott), Huw Richards, John Norris, Peter Clegg, Jonathan Main, and Steve Culliford, were joined by retired teacher Mr. Keith James at the get-together.
The former school located on London Road, which later became a community centre, was sold last year by the county council to Esterkin Developments Pembroke Ltd, with plans for a Pets at Home retail store to be built.
“We all left Llanion between 1968 and 1970, and this small reunion was arranged via Facebook with a view to organising a larger event later in the year for all ex-pupils and staff,” said Steve Culliford.
“We were saddened to hear that the old school has been sold by the local council and that there are plans for it to be demolished with a character-less retail unit taking its place.
“Externally, it is a fine example of a Victorian era school building on the main road into Pembroke Dock.
“It is a pity developers don’t think to incorporate some of the old buildings into the new.
“Llanion holds many happy memories for us of assemblies, sports days, concerts, good friends, wonderful teachers and ‘outdated’ teaching methods that don’t seem to have held us back in our careers!” joked Steve.
“Most of us have not seen each other for over 40 years, we had a wonderful time and Mr. James was thrilled to see us again. His memory is amazing!” he added.
