A new community growing project called Cilrath Acre has launched in Narberth, with a vision to bring people together to grow and enjoy food, whilst supporting those most in need.

The project is part of the same charity which founded Pembrokeshire Foodbank and will be working with volunteers to grow food on the site, donating half of what’s grown in support of the county’s Foodbanks.

Set in an acre of beautiful countryside, the project is looking forward to welcoming volunteers in the coming months to help get growing underway.

Following a recent visit to the site, Labour county councillor for Narberth, Marc Tierney said: “The project at Cilrath Acre has great potential to engage local residents in what will be the first community growing project of its kind in the area.

“This green space will also bring people together, helping to create new connections whilst people enjoy the health and well- being benefits of volunteering outdoors.

“As the cost-of-living crisis tightens its grip, I was especially pleased to hear that food grown at Cilrath Acre will be provided to the Pembrokeshire Foodbank so that those needing extra help can access locally grown, good quality fruit and vegetables.”

Manager of Pembrokeshire Foodbank Ian Watling commented that the regular supply of fresh food that the project will offer is “the perfect solution to our constant problem of under supply of both range and quantity of produce.”

He added: “We love the idea of creating opportunities to build relationships and create a sense of belonging to a local community.”

The project is already working with the charity Tir Coed who have begun a free growing course on the site.

Family and volunteer days are planned alongside seasonal community events where people can get involved.

Cilrath Acre project manager Lowri Harris said: “We’re really looking forward to working with volunteers to develop this important project.

“The project offers a valuable opportunity to connect with the environment and each other to both grow and enjoy locally grown food together, whilst also supporting those affected by food poverty.”
