Maggs Smith, 64, a stroke survivor from Narberth, is set to take part in this year’s Step Out for Stroke fundraising walk at Pembroke Castle on June 24 in support of the Stroke Association.

Walking is now difficult for Maggs after her stroke three years ago which affected her left side. But this isn’t going to stop her from completing the mile-long journey and raising awareness of stroke.

Maggs said: “I’m working towards walking the first and last 10 steps with my stick and carers, and do the rest in my chair. No matter how many steps you can do, it’s all about being there, giving your support and having a go.

“It’s a way of raising awareness and resources for stroke, such as the Pembroke Stroke Group which meets every Thursday. Gillie, the Stroke Association coordinator, is the fantastic person who helps organise it and offers such great support.”

Maggs is also a member of Strike a Chord Haverfordwest, the Pembrokeshire Stroke Recovery Service’s choir which will be entertaining the walkers at Step Out.

She added: “I’m looking forward to singing with the choir. I really enjoy it as it’s not only something relaxing to do, but uplifting as well.”

Step Out for Stroke walks will take place across Wales from May to July 2018 to raise money for the Stroke Association to support stroke survivors and their families. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and there are almost 66,000 people in Wales living with the after effects. For stroke survivors who are taking part it’s also a celebration of their first steps towards overcoming the challenges of living with stroke and regaining their independence.
