Compost Corner

Narberth's Compost Corner will be celebrating its first anniversary and National Compost Week on Saturday, May 9, from 10 am to 2 pm.

"This year, our theme is 'Food for Thought' so we will have vegetables grown in our own compost, demonstrate how to make seed compost from the basic course mixture everyone finds in their compost bin, plus answer any queries presented to us," said Geraldine Leach.

There will be a competition for the children and basic refreshments.

She continued: "We welcome new members and anyone interested from a wide area around Narberth."

For an annual fee of £10, members can exchange garden waste for mature compost and wood chippings on the site any Wednesday throughout the year and have advice from master composters (trained by Garden Organic of Ryton near Coventry).

The site is on the road to Heron's Brook near Narberth Bridge. The site entrance is opposite Stone Ditch Farm. There are eight open slatted bins which are in constant use.

Added Geraldine: "We also have some conventional plastic 'Daleks' and a range of different compost bins for demonstration purposes. There is also a chipper which makes wood chippings for mulching and a trailer which can be used by members.

Alpha

The Liberty cafe celebrated with an Indian meal the completion of not only the Alpha course, but the follow up Beta course. Those that have been part of the recent Alpha courses are looking forward to welcoming any new attendees to the next course.

This course commences on Wednesday, May 27, 7.15 for 7.30 pm at the Liberty Cafe, Court House, Market Square, Narberth.

A two-course meal is served (not an Indian meal this time), followed by a short talk and discussion. There is no financial charge for the evening.

At an Alpha course people explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over 10 thought-provoking weekly sessions. It is low-key, friendly and fun - and is supported by all the main Christian denominations.

The Alpha course is designed primarily for people who aren't churchgoers. Most courses attract a diverse range of guests of different ages and backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints.

Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally, but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. If you would like to attend please put your name down at the Liberty cafe, or send an email to [email protected]">[email protected]

Narberth U3A

Pembrokeshire displays a huge variety of rocks and scenery and Narberth U3A has been making the most of it (writes Dave Dando).

The Mid and West Wales U3A Geology Network has been recently set up to encourage members to explore the wealth of geological features that exist in the area.

Following a recent visit to Whitesands, the next field trip is planned for Wednesday, May 27, to the Porthgain and Abereiddy coast. The aim is to examine evidence of Pembrokeshire's rather violent geological history 500 million years ago in the Ordovician Period. Wales was not a good place for a quiet holiday in those days with earthquakes and the odd volcano.

The walking group set out from Moylegrove for a five-mile circular trek, although some claimed it was longer. They followed the coastal path through Ceibwr Bay, but they also succumbed to our rocky history when they were confronted by the impressive Devil's Cauldron which demanded some attention and a few photographs.

It was flora and fauna not fossils that interested the natural history group who spent a day at the Cilgerran Wildlife Centre. They followed the badger trail, but despite evidence of their presence, the badgers kept a low profile. What they did observe were more than 100 examples of plants and birds, including cormorants, herons, and Canada geese. The elusive reed warbler lived up to its reputation by being heard, but not seen. Members are keen to return later in the year when other species should put in an appearance.

A visit to the National Museum in Cardiff is planned on Wednesday, June 10, to the Sisley exhibition. Members interested should contact Graham Goodeve.

If you are retired and now have time to take an interest in art (appreciation and painting), music appreciation, classical music, bridge, history, poetry, reading, tai chi, walking, natural history, gardening, mah-jongg, geology, lunch club or topical discussion, then  telephone 862964 or 860152 for more information.

TEMPLETON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

The March coffee morning was very well attended and as it fell on St. Patrick's Day, the coffee drinkers joined in a rendition of 'Sweet Molly Malone' and 'When Irish Eyes Are Smiling'. What was lacking in choral talent was made up with enthusiasm.

The April coffee morning came after Easter so unfortunately a visit by the Easter bunny was missed. Hot cross buns were however provided, this time without the necessity to sing!

Bingo has now re-commenced, mostly on Thursday nights, but check beforehand as some weeks the night has been changed to Fridays due to the unavailability of the hall.

The next Templeton Community Association event will be the Big Plant Sale on Saturday, May 9, on the Village Green. There will be plenty of bargains and a great variety of plants, as well as the usual array of refreshments.
