Grace Church

What are you doing on Sunday? You can find all kinds of things to do, I'm sure you don't need anyone to suggest a few. However, first things first. We guarantee, that if you give a Sunday morning to come to our 10.30 am morning service, you will be pleasantly surprised.

You will find people of all ages, different backgrounds and nationalities meeting as one family. We will do our best to make it well worth getting up for, to enjoy serious fun, to hear a talk that challenges and is applicable to life today, good music and find new friends. You will be greeted and served by some of the amazing people who are part of Grace.

We would love to see you this Sunday. Come on your own, with friend or family, you are most welcome. Grace meet every Sunday at the Queen's Hall at 10.30 am. Coffee is served from 10 am. Car parking is adjacent in Narberth's main car park.

Ben Davies, Bracknell Family Church, was the speaker at Grace for the weekend. Leaders met at the Court House from a variety of churches and Ben, who ministered in one church for 43 years, seeing it grow to 700 people and then handing over the leadership, shared from his experience of life and the local church. Personal disciplines, the whole church, training, the legacy we leave behind, was extremely well received by those present.

On the Sunday morning, Grace gathered, young, middles and seniors, for serious fun.

Ben Davies spoke on the 'presence of God' in the gathering. What makes a church different to a social club or a similar community enterprise, what is its distinguishing feature?

The weekend culminated in a sense that a page had been turned and people had taken a step forward.

Speaking about the evening, club steward Anne Lonsdale said "It was a great evening although a number of regulars were unable to attend and it was most informative to learn so much about and sample the products from the representatives of Celtic Wines, Pantmawr Cheeses and Bethesda Milk Butter.

"So many people have enquired about the evening that another cheese and wine evening will be held sometime in 2009."

ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH

On October 5, members and friends of St. Andrew's Church celebrated Harvest with a traditional service led by the Rector, Revd. Peter Lewis.

The church had been beautifully decorated by the lady members with flower arrangements and the traditional corn dollies, plus harvest items which remind us of the harvest message.

The harvest hymns were played by our organist, Dr. Geraint Rees, and sung with great enthusiasm by a large congregation.

After the service, members retired to the church hall, where the lady members of the church had prepared a delicious traditional harvest lunch.

Approximately 80 members and friends enjoyed a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and enjoyed a large variety of food with something to suit everyone's palate.

A raffle, with seasonal goods as prizes, had been organised and the winners were: selection of harvest vegetables - Mrs. Iris Bevan; basket of fruit - Mrs. Lynne Firmin; Michaelmas Daisy plant - Mrs. Elizabeth Morris; box of chocolates - Mrs. Elaine Evans; basket of fruit - Rose Simpkins.

The Rector, in his usual jovial manner, helped proceedings along with his stories and tales causing much hilarity and proceeded to both thank and congratulate all the ladies who had prepared such a wonderful meal and the gentlemen for all their assistance. He also thanked everyone for coming and helping to encourage such a happy time of fellowship within St. Andrew's.

The next joint meeting of the village association and the action group will be held at the hall on Tuesday, November 18, at 7.30 pm.

Don't forget the quiz at the hall on Saturday, November 15, at 7.30 pm, bring a plate of food and a bottle and join the fun.

Film on Sunday

What a delightful evening we spent watching 'Juno' at the Queen's Hall last Sunday.

The touching story of a 16-year-old's unplanned pregnancy proved as entertaining as it was heart-warming.

How often do you find a cast who actually look like 16-year-olds, or, if you do, how often have the make-up people ruined all the girls with the make-over? (Remember Kylie Minogue in 'Neighbours' all those years back?) Not so with Ellen Page who took the leading role; she had the looks, the voice and the vocabulary which marked her out for juvenile with a capital 'J'.

Top marks for choosing the grottiest spottiest lot of adolescent boys on the planet to support her. Well done script writer Diablo Cody, and that's a great complement coming from one who regularly struggles with American dialogue. No wonder she won a BAFTA.

Not that the film didn't throw up a question or two. Can anyone tell me about infant adoption U.S. style? According to 'Juno' it takes no more than an ad. in the 'Wanted' column of your local paper and the hiring of an attorney, then let market forces prevail, (which happened in this instance to be a very sane 'don't wannabe' under-age mum whose shrewd purchasing sense led her, eventually, to choose exactly the right over-age 'wannabe' mum.)

In fact, a lot of Diablo Cody's story is about changing roles - the youthful unexpectedly accepting what life throws at them, and coping with it, while their elders lack the maturity to deal with life in general... for a pleasant evening out and for something to think about... see it.

This Sunday's film is 'Goodbye Bafana' Cert. 15. Dir. Billie August. The incredible story of Nelson Mandela's journey from prisoner to president, told through the blinkered eyes of a white prison guard.

Doors open at 7 pm for the bar as well as coffee and the famous film society cakes and puddings. Ring (01834) 861047 for further information.
