‘Santa Claus is coming to town’...and more than one it would seem in Tenby this winter.
The resort’s annual ‘Santa Run’ could be moved to form part of a festive celebration in the town leading up to Christmas, the organisers have suggested.
The minutes of a recent meeting of the town’s Christmas Festivities committee came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday night.
Although the initial intention of the committee was to try and spread the entertainment over a period of four weekends in the run-up to Christmas, it was once again felt that there was not enough support forthcoming to achieve this, and as such it was agreed to focus again this year on one event for Saturday, December 2.
It was discussed that Tenby Round Table had considered switching the date of their ‘Santa Run’ to this date to make it more of a day-lomg event, possibly with a Christmas market to keep people in town and help boost the local economy.
The idea received unanimous support, with the suggestion being for the run to take place at around 12 noon, followed by events carrying on throughout the afternoon up to the lifeboat launching to fetch Father Christmas and bring him into Tudor Square around 4 pm, ready for the festive lights switch-on at 5 pm.
Father Christmas would again be transferred to a grotto at the De Valence, with the venue also hosting a Family Fun Night’ to round the day off.
“We’re on track again this year, and the Christmas Festivities will be meeting again early in September to discuss the arrangements,” the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, told councillors.
