A Narberth man who damaged a shop window in Haverfordwest in an attempt to harm himself, has been given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,380 in compensation after causing criminal damage.

Twenty-nine-year-old Andrew Morris, of 41 High Street, was arrested on January 5, after police carried out a search for the man who they suspected had cracked the window of the Game On Skate and Surf store on Haverfordwest High Street, whilst out in the town.

Haverfordwest magistrates heard on Tuesday that Mr. Morris admitted to police before his arrest that he had "put the window through" and CCTV footage showed him running head first into the shop window.

Representing Mr. Morris, solicitor James Subbiani told magistrates how his client suffered extreme difficulties with alcohol problems, which he was addressing with counselling through the 'Prism' service, but that he had "fallen off the band-wagon spectacularly" that night.

"Something had upset Mr. Morris when he had wanted to discuss his alcohol problems with Prism the previous day and he fell off the wagon," explained Mr. Subbiani.

"The CCTV footage shows that it was a clear attempt by Mr. Morris to harm himself rather than to cause criminal damage," he added.

Magistrates gave Mr. Morris a conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 in court costs and compensation of £1,380 to the owner of the property.
