Major works to improve the gateway to Pendine and Llanmiloe will get underway later this month.

Carmarthenshire County Council identified the need for the Pendine Gateway environmental enhancement project through community consultation in 2007. It aims to address the future sustainability of the Pendine and Llanmiloe communities.

The gateway development will enhance the appearance and quality of life for both Pendine and Llanmiloe; encourage economic growth and provide a boost to the tourism market in Pendine.

The enhancement works, to be delivered by Gerald Davies Contractors, will be carried out over a four-month period starting on March 28 and will include a new cycle/footpath, landscaping and public realm improvements.

County council physical regeneration development officer Mike Morgan said: "Developing the stretch between the villages of Llanmiloe and Pendine will significantly improve the visual impact of the gateway into Pendine and provide a boost for local businesses."

The start of works follows successful negotiations between Carmarthenshire County Council and the Ministry Of Defence over the lease of land between Llanmiloe and Pendine.

The pilot enhancement project is funded under the Village Enhancement Scheme which has received funding of £940,049 through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007 - 2013, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural fund for Rural Development. The project aims to enhance the appearance of rural towns and villages and stimulate economic growth.

Executive board member for regeneration and leisure Clr. Clive Scourfield said: "The imminent start of the work on the Gateway is good news for the communities of Pendine and Llanmiloe. This investment will enhance the area and give a boost to the economy, particularly tourism."
