A Bank Holiday switch in 2020 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day - will see some juggling of the events calendar in Tenby.

The May Day bank holiday is traditionally held on a Monday but will be put back to the Friday and form part of a three-day weekend of commemorative events to mark Victory in Europe Day.

Tenby’s Mayor Making ceremony and the visit of the Scooter Rally will now be moved from their planned dates in May.

“Obviously when we heard about the Bank Holiday switch on Monday we got in touch with Paul Reeves, one of the Scooter Rally organisers to see what they wanted to do, and it appears that they have decided to switch the rally to May 8 to 10,” said the clerk to Tenby town council, Andrew Davies.

“This has to be agreed at the BRSA national conference in October to make it the National Rally but the Scooter Collective South Wales has put a post-up on their Facebook page.”

“We also had an email from Pembrokeshire County Council’s Marc Owen indicating that the Carten charity ride wanted to come in on Saturday, May 2 – the planned Saturday of the Scooter Rally, which could have been problematic, so now that the scooterists have decided to move their date, Carten has been confirmed for May 2.”

The switch also means that the date of of next year’s Mayor Making will be subject to change.

“We put it back a week to allow the De Valence Pavilion DVP to be used for the Scooter Rally on May 1 - which should have been the date of Mayor Making, and as May 8 is now a Bank Holiday - town council staff will be off!” continued Mr. Davies.

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, members agreed to push the Mayor Making date back to Friday, May 15.

“That way we can make Clr. Brown do an extra two weeks as Mayor!” laughed Clr. Laurence Blackhall.
