On Wednesday, October 12, Tenby Friendship Club welcomed Andrew from the NHS to talk again about preventing falls. He advised members to make sure their medication had a review at least every 12 months with a pharmacist. Also, members should have their eye sight checked, and be careful when using varifocals and bifocals.

Andrew showed club members again how to get up from the floor if they did fall, by stacking cushions and pulling up on a firm chair. ‘Is your blood pressure ok?’ was a question Andrew asked members. He told them that three-quarters of British people are overweight. Another question was ‘Are you drinking enough throughout the day?’

A walking stick - as a third leg - is a positive thing to prevent falls. Andrew used a chart to show how even active people slow down with age, but not by much, and everybody slows more in their eighties and nineties. He advised members to do heel to toe walking in a line, to practice standing on one foot, etc. to keep balance and suppleness always.

All members came away with lots of ideas of how to keep themselves healthy, and Andrew was thanked for coming to give us all these ideas.

The next meeting, and the last before half term, is a ‘Pink’ meeting. Please wear pink. There will be a raffle for Cancer with pink items as prizes! The refreshments will be pink, and members can talk about cancer that has affected them. This is at 2pm at Augustus Place Hall on Wednesday, October 26.
