Heading into 2019 the South East Pembrokeshire Community Health Network has outlined its plans for the year.

“The local health service, in undertaking its vital role in our community, continues to evolve and it is essential that the community continues to provide a perspective that reflects its needs and ideas,” said SEPCHN’s acting chair, Mansel Thomas.

To this end the SEPCHN plans to involve itself in a number of issues in the New Year, amongst which are the following - The Tenby Cottage Hospital ‘Walk In Service’ continues its essential role, with many patients attending.

“In the present circumstances the nurses perform an important function for our community,” said Mr. Thomas.

“Because of its success perhaps it is now time to further consider detail of the provision, however there is a continuing shortage of specialist nursing staff and perhaps the Health Board first of all needs to be encouraged to invest in further specialist nurse training.”

He explained that Tenby Surgery continues to refine its methods, with the new management team deciding to open the surgery doors at 8 am, giving early patients access to the building and facilities and shelter from the weather. Reception continues to be at 8.30 am.

“The new system for booking appointments with the receptionists seems to be working well with the number of appointments missed or not attended drastically reduced,” continued Mr. Thomas.

“The new arrangements are a positive step forward, but again members experiences of using the system will be appreciated.

“The major surgery issue continues to be the appointment of GPs.

“Network members have raised the possibility of the community being involved in the Health Board GP advertisements, expressing positive aspects of life in our community. SEPCHN will follow that up.”

Another important matter approaching this year is the implementation of the Tenby Health Hub as planned in the recent Hywel Dda University Health Board consultation, with ten such Hubs planned for the Hywel Dda area all with different emphases.

“The health needs of our area are unique and the community is often in the best position to reflect on this situation,” commented Mr. Thomas.

“Representatives have been asked to attend Hub meetings and members will be kept up to date. It is essential that our health needs are considered.

“The next meeting of SEPCHN will take place soon, and we wish wish everyone well for the coming year,” added Mr. Thomas.
