Sir, A number of individuals who had clear links with Tenby and who were killed in action or died in service during the two World Wars were not commemorated on the War Memorial in Trafalgar Gardens.
It was proposed to add these names to the War Memorial to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day 1918.
It was originally thought that the exercise would involve some 20-odd names and the Tenby Town Council agreed to sponsor the proposal in the sum of £5,000.
Unfortunately, the research was too successful and the number of ‘missing’ names rose to 91, which is too many to be included on the existing War Memorial and will require the erection of a separate Memorial Wall.
This means that the cost of the proposal has more than doubled to over £13,000.
In addition to the original Town Council sponsorship of £5,000, a further £6,000 has already been sponsored, but this still falls short of the necessary funding.
If there are any more public spirited businesses or individuals in Tenby who would care to sponsor this worthwhile project it would be greatly appreciated.
The original War Memorial was funded by public sponsorship so, hopefully, the people of Tenby can once again express their appreciation of the sacrifice by those who died on their behalf.
Would any interested parties please contact Andrew Davies, the town clerk, as soon as possible since time is of the essence if the work is to be completed before November 2018.
John H T Griffiths,
Tenby.
