A tougher line was to be taken with people who committed crimes in Pembrokeshire.
A warning of this hardening attitude was given by Lord Merthyr, chairman of the Quarter Sessions.
Lord Merthyr gave his warning in a public statement before passing sentence on seven youths who it was said, had subjected the Tenby area to ‘a rash of criminal behaviour’ that summer.
Sentences ranging from imprisonment to borstal training, a period at a detention centre and probation were imposed on the youths who appeared on 18 counts involving theft.
If voting at 18 came before the next general election, it would be the best pointer to a Plaid Cymru victory in Pembrokeshiren said the party’s candidate for the constituency, Mr. Wynne Samuel.
Guests were taken by boat from Tenby Harbour to attend a wedding on Caldey Island.
The wedding was the first to be held in the Abbey Church of St. Margaret and a special dispensation had to be obtained from Rome for the ceremony to take place.
When the woman entered the church for the wedding, it would be the first time a woman would have been allowed into the Abbey.
A dozen Cistercian monks would sing the Nuptial Mass at the High Altar.
Trophy winners at Tenby Golf Club’s finals day were Geoffrey Childs (Scratch Cup for the third year running), David Lewis (The Davies Cup for mid-handicap players) and Bill Davies (the Junior Cup.
