There would be no by-election in Tenby to fill the three vacancies on the Borough Council. When nominations closed, only three papers had been received for the three vacant seats.
Among the candidates to be returned unopposed was a young Tenby housewife and guest house proprietor Mrs. Jill Carol Torkington. At 27, she was to be the youngest woman ever to serve on the Borough Council.
She would have the support of another woman for also returning unopposed was Mrs. Iris Davies, wife of Clr. Wallace Davies. The third new member was Mr. Peter Lee Osborne, proprietor of the Fourcroft Hotel.
The Welsh Women’s Bowling Association were planning to hold the 1970 Women’s International matches at Tenby.
It was a Whitsun of sunshine and showers with the South Pembrokeshire resorts getting the lion’s share of the sunshine. Thousands of visitors travelled from all over Britain.
History was made at the annual meeting of Whitland Parish Council when a woman member was appointed chairman. She was Mrs. R. E. Hopkins, a prominent member of the nursing profession, who was also chairman of the Carmarthenshire branch of the Royal College of Midwives.
Tenby’s Mayor and Mayoress, Clr. and Mrs. T. Gilroy Phillips broke with tradition in holding the Civic Service at a dance hall. It was a gesture to the Salvation Army whose Commandant, Captain T. G. Sims, had been appointed Mayor’s Chaplain. The service was held at the De Valence Pavilion.
Saundersfoot’s latest seafront development Beddoe’s Court, an attractive block of flats and shops with a top-floor restaurant, became a part of the holiday season scene for the first time over the Whitsun weekend.
