Tenby’s walled town pedestrianisation scheme looks set to be extended this summer due to a change of dates for two sporting events held in the town.

At a meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council’s cabinet on Monday, members gave their backing for the scheme, to be operated on an ‘experimental order’ for this summer, with the operating period to run from Monday, July 2, to Friday, September 14, with a daily 5.30 pm finish.

It will be the 13th year of the scheme that prohibits unauthorised vehicles from entering the town’s walls between 11 am and 5.30 pm.

The Authority’s cabinet member for planning and infrastructure, Clr. Phil Baker explained that by allowing the scheme to be operated on a trial basis for 2018, it would encompass the Long Course Weekend beginning on July 13 and Ironman Wales on Sunday, September 9.

Last year’s scheme commenced on Monday, July 10, and ended on September 8.

Clr. Baker said that both sporting events had interchangeable dates due to them being linked to high tides, and that the Long Course Weekend was occurring later in July this year.

Cabinet members approved the proposal and also for a review of the trial be undertaken and the findings be reported back to them.
