Funky Leaf Prints

As autumn comes upon us and the leaves start to turn, you can find some interesting shapes and textures around. When you are out for a walk, look out for a mixture of different natural designs. Let them dry a little . But not so long that they become brittle. Get some paper and paint. A clean paintbrush and a little water. Coat your leaves with a thin layer of paint with the brush, and press each leaf firmly on to the piece of paper, hold it firmly for a few seconds, then carefully peel it off. The back and front will create different effects, and the amount of paint will make a difference too. Try to capture all the veins spreading out. Allow the picture to dry. You can wash and reuse the leaves.

Black History Month

October is traditionally the time when African chiefs and leaders gathered to settle their differences, so Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who started Black History Month in the UK chose this month. The theme this year is ‘Time for Action: Change not words’. It is a time to celebrate the achievements, culture and contributions from Black people to our lives today. You could find out about Bishop Wilfred Wood, Pearl Alcock, Louise Da-Cocodia or Aldwyn Roberts, and you could come along to the event at the museum below!

Windrush Celebration

Tonight, Friday, October 7at 7pm at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, there is a special event to celebrate the people who sailed on the Empress Windrush and their contribution to Welsh history and culture, with artist and writer Eve Howard, the Sheba Soul Ensemble Black Woman’s Theatre Company and more. This is a free event, and everyone is welcome.

World Smile Day

Friday, October 7 is also World Smile Day. The World Smile Day challenge is to do an act of kindness to help someone to smile. It’s also a good time to paint, draw or craft a happy face and share it with someone. If you spread the word about world smile day, you can go on to their website,www.worldsmileday.com , and print yourself an World Smile Day Ambassador sticker!

Coin Collecting or Numismatics

This is good time think about collecting coins. Start by gathering 1 coin in each denomination – 1p, 2p etc. Then start checking the dates that the coins were issued on, and see how many different ones for each denomination you can find. Soon, there will be a new set coming out , with King Charles on instead of the Queen, so you will be able to add them in to your collection. You can aslo look out for pre-decimal coins such as shillings. Keep doubles to swap, aways keeping the one in the best condition for yourself. You could also collect foreign coins when you go on holiday abroad, and get people to bring them back for you too. You can get special pockets and folders to keep coins in if you get very enthusiastic!

World Mental Health Day

This is on Monday, October 10 and the theme this year is ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’. You can show your support by wearing a green ribbon on the day, and have a conversation about mental health with someone – it’s good for people to know that they can talk about it and that its okay to get support from your friends and family – we all need it sometimes!

Tenby Food Hub

There is a new supplier for this, Fresh and Fruity of Milford. They delivered for the first time last week, and the produce was lovely! It looked nice and fresh and there was a good variety. If you would like to see what you get in a £5 bag of fruit, vegetables or salad before you decide whether to order or not, pop along to the Old Chapel in Lower Frog St about 1pm on Thursday 13, when the next delivery will be there ready for people to pick up.

Tenby Urban Thinkscape

Urban Thinkscape is a project of Playful Learning Landscapes that groups three low-cost activities together to generate high-quality interactions between children and caregivers in an urban environment. Playful Learning Landscapes provides 4 templates that communities can choose from to develop their set of three urban activities (Puzzle Wall, Jumping Feet, Giant Ruler, Analogy Stepping Stones). Communities are free to develop their own activities for the site as long as the new activities follow the playful learning design principles. There could be coastal stepping stones, a seaside scavenge hunt, whatever we can think of. The next meeting to plan what we would like to do with our funding and where in Tenby to put them, will be on Thursday, October 13 at 11 am in the Old Chapel. Everyone is welcome to come and give their ideas and suggestions.

Eat Your Pumpkin

On Saturday October 22, there is funding for an event about using the insides of your pumpkin rather than throwing it away. It would be great to have some activities going on such as crafts etc as well as a cooking demonstration and workshop of ways to use your pumpkin flesh and seeds. The plan is to have a pumpkin soup social after the cooking is done. Get in touch with any suggestions!
