World Photo Day

Friday, August 19, is World Photo Day. The aim is to get people to share photos to connect people and raise awareness. Founded in 2009 by the Australian photographer Korske Ara, the date of the 19th was chosen to celebrate World Photo Day as it is the date that the patent of the daguerreotype (an early method of photography) was purchased by the French government. What will you share a photo of?

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

This Sunday, August 21, from 11am, there will be an open day in the Edible Community Garden on Tenby’s Sutton Street. This year, it will be a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Everyone is invited to come along with a teddy bear if they have one, and with some picnic food to share. Cold drinks will be provided. You can just come along with your own picnic if you wish. There will also be a teddy bear’s hat competition, with the chance to make one in the Garden when you arrive if you wish.

There will also be the unveiling of the plaque by the mayor to celebrate the garden being awarded Community Green Flag status as an outstanding garden run by volunteers – congratulations, everyone who has been involved!

Custard Ice Cream

Did you know that as well as using cream, you can make ice cream using custard? Make it up as usual, leave it to cool, mix in some milk (half a cup for a pint of custard), sugar (about 4 oz) and any flavourings you want. Either use an ice cream maker, or put it in a tub in the freezer and bring it out every 20 mins or so to give it a good stir. How many flavours can you think of? Chocolate (with a bit of cocoa powder), coffee, jam, what will you do?

Poetry in the Park

At 3pm on Sunday, August 21, there is another gathering of poets. There was thought of having it in the bandstand this month, but it was also felt that if the weather stays so warm, it is a bit far to get to in the heat, so it might be better to postpone the bandstand visit this month and stay in the Edible Garden as usual. Everyone is welcome to bring a poem to share or just to enjoy listening to poetry.

Films4Tenby

This Tuesday, August 23, Films4Tenby have their final double bill of the summer. At 4pm it is Clifford the Big Red Dog. This is £3 entry for everyone, doors open at 3.30pm. Later, at 7pm there is a screening of the new biopic, Elvis. This is £5 or £4 for members and doors will open at 6.30pm. Remember, you can also order a pre-screening two-course meal at the Fuschia for only £13 – and they often manage to theme the food to suit the film! Make an evening of it, just get in touch direct with them.

Ukrainian Independence Day

This is on Wednesday, August 24 and is the day that Ukraine became an independent state. There would usually be celebrations, fairs and a national holiday in the Ukraine. There are lots of things happening to help support the Ukrainians who have come to this area. There is a meeting every Wednesday afternoon in New Hedges village hall, and a chance on a Saturday morning to practice English in Deer Park Baptist Church, Tenby. Everyone, Ukrainians included, is invited along to the community edible garden to help keep it going – anyone missing their garden please feel free to come along any time to do some gardening there – and on a Tuesday at 11am if you would like to chat to someone. There is also an open invitation to any Ukrainians and anyone else wanting to chat to people and practice English – or to help people practice their English - to come along to the Old Chapel in Lower Frog Street, Tenby on Thursdays at 11am for tea, cake and company.

Catch a crab

You can do this sitting on the harbour and all you need is a net, a bucket, some fishing line securely attached to a stick or a handle, and a bit of bait, maybe a bit of fish or bacon. Tie the bait to the end of the string and lower it till it touches the sea bed. Wiggle it around a bit and wait for a tug on the line. Lift it up to see what you have caught -and if it is a crab, pop it into the bucket using the net. Have a look and see which of the 60 species of British crab you think it is. Then let it go again… and never put two at once in the bucket as they might fight. You could take photos of them to help you identify them later. Make sure you leave everything just how you found it.

Crab Football

While we are talking crabs, here’s a beach game for the more athletic among us. Find a clear spot on the beach, take your shoes off and play football with the usual rules, except everyone has to put their hands on the floor behind them and scuttle like crabs! Don’t have goal keepers, and make sure you have bare feet, as faces aren’t as far from feet as they would normally be!
