Pupils from the Stepaside Senedd Eco committee led a whole school assembly to introduce the Sustrans Walk and Wheel programme.
Pupils gathered on Wednesday, March 15 were reminded of the benefits of walking to school, these benefits not only add to a healthier lifestyle for individuals but they reduce the pollution created by car journeys. Classes have taken part in a survey about how they travel to school before the two week long walking and wheeling event. “This will set our baseline and help us to calculate how much pollution we add to the air and how many car journeys could be replaced by a more active journey. With the help of Sustrans we hope to be able to show how much we have reduced pollution by as we all work together to travel actively to school” commented Mrs Williams the ECO Schools lead at the school.
The walking and wheeling event starts on March 20 and lasts until the end of term on March 31. The school will be added to a prize draw each day that more than 15 per cent of pupils travel actively to school. Whole school will hold a walk to school Wednesday during both weeks and hopes that this will allow pupils who live a little further away to park away from the school and join in. This will reduce congestion in the car park and reduce the exhaust fumes emitted around the school.
