ST FLORENCE VC School emerged victorious in the 2025 Welston Challenge, narrowly beating Manorbier VC School and Sageston CP School in a day filled with hand-on scientific exploration and friendly competition.
Organised and delivered by the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience, the atmosphere was electric and the children were described as “amazing” at this much-loved annual event which has inspired young minds since its launch in 2006.

Hosted by Dr Stephanie Matthews and Professor Tony Campbell CBE, co-founders of the Darwin Centre, the Welston Challenge brings the excitement of science to life through four interactive workshops: pond dipping, a woodland nature walk, an exploration of bioluminescence, and microscopy skills in the wet lab. Each activity challenged pupils to observe, analyse, and engage with the natural world like real scientists.
After a tightly contested day of discovery and learning, St Florence Primary School emerged victorious, winning by just one point in what was one of the closest finishes in the event’s history.

Prof Campbell CBE and Dr Matthews praised all participants:
“Every pupil brought energy, curiosity, and great teamwork. It’s truly inspiring to see the next generation of scientists grow in confidence and passion through this challenge.”
Amy from the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience added:
“It’s not just about winning—it’s about nurturing a love of science and nature. We’re incredibly proud of all the schools involved.”

Now in its 19th year, the Welston Challenge continues to be a flagship event in Pembrokeshire’s educational calendar, blending fun and learning in a setting that encourages young people to explore the natural sciences.
