Put 65 children aged 3 to 13 on a beach, add a sponsored beach run, mix in an interesting religious ceremony and what do you have - a healthy and happy bunch of students with a new take on an RE lesson.
Castle School pupils took to Saundersfoot beach recently where, from the youngest aged 3 to some lofty year 8 pupils, they ran laps the length of the beach with all of the older students and most of the younger ones completing the 2 mile course.
With perplexed passers by wondering why staff and parent helpers were throwing powder paint at them at various intervals, the children - all wearing white tee shirts - soon became a rainbow of colour.
RE teacher Rebecca Algieri explained the colour run is inspired by the Hindu festival Holi (also known as Festival of Colours) which takes place annually in March and is celebrated around the world.
In addition to marking the arrival of spring, Holi also celebrates fertility, colour, love and the triumph of good over evil. It is inspired by different Hindu mythological stories.
Not only learning interesting facts about different cultures, the youngsters used the afternoon as an opportunity to raise funds for their chosen charity Ty Hafan - a fabulous £1,500 was raised on the day which will be added to the school’s target of £10,000 to be raised in their 10th anniversary year.
The event was supported by staff and many parents.
After the run it was off to Little and Large Lite Bites for tea and medals! Enormous thanks go to proprietors Mr. and Mrs. Ludlow who generously invited the runners in for refreshments.
