Close to 1,200 school children competed in the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships recently.

The annual event, organised by Sport Pembrokeshire, Pembrokeshire County Council’s sport development section, took place at Oakwood theme park.

Forty-eight schools competed in the event, which is one of the largest of its kind in Wales.

Students in years 3 and 4 competed in a 1,000 metres race, with the older pupils in year 5 and 6 having to run a further 500 metres.

Students from Ysgol Harri Tudur/ Henry Tudor School and Haverfordwest High VC School acted as ‘hares’ making sure the participants stayed on course from start to finish. Some of the hares completed the course four times!

The winner of the large school competition was Pembroke’s Ysgol Gelli Aur/ Golden Grove CP School while Templeton CP School won the small schools competition.

Matt Freeman, Active Young People Manager, said “The Oakwood Primary School Cross Country is established as the flagship schools event of the Sport Pembrokeshire calendar and this year we had a record number of finishers.

“This is a great chance for children to represent their schools supported by their parents, staff and peers on a testing cross country course staged at Oakwood theme park.”
