The November meeting of East Williamston Community and Hall Association took place on Monday with a very full agenda.
The committee heard that the October quiz evening had been well-attended, with seven teams enjoying the questions set by Jill and Kerry Thomas. Winners were the High Flyers, with newcomers to the village helping the team to victory. The recently donated trophy will be kept in the community hall and next year there will be an additional prize in December for the team with the most wins over all - an incentive to attend every month!
The Friends of Jubilee Park gave of their time again on the first Saturday of the month and braved the stormy winds and rain to cut back another area of blackthorn which threatened to engulf the trees nearby. The planned bonfire was postponed, due to the weather, but the volunteers were revived with mugs of hot soup. The secretary reported that Pembrokeshire College students had begun coppicing beneath the power lines and strimming around some of the trees, and their future project would be to drain and clear the ponds. The village allotments are taking shape, with several now cultivated and one holder planning to plant vines.
Community Hall bookings included a recent Hallowe'en party and the church, now in a group of seven parishes, continues to be a regular user. Drawings are to be prepared for a small extension to the committee room and plans for extra car parking are under discussion. Matthew Thomas was praised by the committee for his continuing commitment to providing all-year round plant displays outside the hall. Various items may soon enhance the interior, including the glass window from the former Pentlepoir School and a picture and dedication plaque in memory of hall benefactors Phil and Mary Thomas.
The once popular Prothero Whist was recently revived, thanks to the efforts of Brenda Davies, and attracted four tables of players. The winners were awarded the historic trophies and the committee expressed pleasure that the tradition is being carried on.
On Friday, November 29, the hall will be decorated ready for all its Christmas functions. The first chance to admire the committee's efforts will be that same evening, when the bar will open at 5.30 pm for all local friends and neighbours to meet up for a happy hour - or two - to enjoy a drink and a chat. This is a diary date to be noted, as is tomorrow (Saturday) when it is quiz night again. Question master will be Lyn Wilkinson, bar and doors open at 7.30 ready for the 8 pm start and it is still only £2 per person for an evening of fun, with everyone welcome and a raffle taking place in the interval.
