As expected, this local derby produced a hard fought game. Both teams set off at a cracking pace on a bright sunny Saturday morning.
Kick-off had been brought forward so that players, spectators and officials could watch the Division One West fixture between the two clubs later in the day.
The Whitland pack dominated the set-pieces, but the Athletic were slightly more mobile about the field.
There was plenty of movement of the ball, but no real scoring chances produced.
The Wanderers had the first opportunity to score, but scum-half Darren Rees missed out on a chance to give his team the lead.
The game continued to be slugged out, with both sides trying to dominate. Whitland had several further penalty attempts, but the first half ended before either team could break the deadlock.
The second half followed the pattern of the first, but minor injuries started to develop. With both teams depleted due to the lack of substitutes, the players just got on with it.
Athletic scrum-half Rhys Davies drew first blood for the visitors when he kicked a penalty from 40 metres to put the Narberth team in front.
Although both teams attempted to play in an open way, which produced many more scoring chances, neither team could score again through a mixture of solid defence and handling errors.
The win was the Athletic's third of the season in local derby league and cup matches between the sides in a statistic which is something of a rarity.
