There were welcoming choir voices on Saturday when seven charity cyclists from Whitland Male Voice Choir arrived at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre on one of the first stages of a marathon which will end next month at London’s Albert Hall.

The intrepid chorister cyclists are using pedal power to visit nearly all the 28 choirs which will be taking part in the grand Albert Hall concert on May 19 staged by the Welsh Association of Male Voice Choirs.

There to meet them was a contingent from Pembroke and District Male Voice who will also be staging at the Albert Hall, among over 800 voices.

After a welcoming hot drink and a brief look at the Heritage Centre the cyclists were presented with a cheque for £185.50 representing a collection made among members of the Pembroke and District choir.

The presentation was made by choir chairman Tony Ward.

The cyclists are raising funds for Prostate Cymru and will arrive at the Albert Hall on Friday, May 18 in time to take part in the massed voices concert.

“Basically we’re trying to cycle through every town with a choir going to the 1000 voices event at the Albert Hall in May,” said Gareth Edwards, of the choir who so far have raised over £3,000 for their cause.

“We’re doing it in legs which started three weeks ago in Towyn, and from there went to Rhayader and Lampeter (Cwm Ann), Llandeilo (Bois y Castell) Ammanford Tumble (Mynydd Mawr).

“Last weekend we visited Haverfordwest, Pembroke and Tenby, before cycling back to Whitland for sausage and chips!” he continued.

On Monday they cycled to Bancyfelin (Bois y felin) at night to get to their practice, and this weekend will be starting in Ogmore vale Tonteg (Bois y goetre) Swansea, Morriston RFC and finishing in Burry port.

The weekend after that they will visit Tredegar, Beaufort, Newbridge, Abertillery and Tonypandy (Cambrian) then back to Cwmafon to a practice with Cor de Cymru.

Finally the week of the Albert Hall event they will cycle over three days with stops in Caldicot (choir), Oxford (Welsh choir) and then the last day to the Albert hall to meet Prostate Cymru representatives on the steps of the venue. You can donate to the cause by visiting the webpage www.justgiving.com/fundraising/whitlandmalechoir-ProstrateCymru
