Signage could be introduced along Tenby’s South Beach directing members of the public towards bins to alleviate a long-standing problem of irresponsible dog owners dumping dog waste bags in the area.

Tenby Town Council called for the signage to be introduced last year to point out to people where the bins were located to try and stop people leaving their dog waste bags in a pile by the zig-zag area down to the beach.

Councillors suggested that they were willing to fund the signage themselves rather than Pembrokeshire County Council, and at Tuesday night’s meeting, the town clerk told them that a design for the sign calling for people to clean up after their pooch and to be a ‘responsible dog owner’ had been submitted.

Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter said that the wording on the design failed to point out where the bins were located, which was the whole point of the signage in the first place.

“It’s no good to us unless it says that the bins are in the car park,” she commented.

Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown told her colleagues that she was still under the assumption that certain people wouldn’t walk up to the car park from the beach to deposit the dog waste bags.

“At the moment there is always a pile down there, I cleaned up there just this morning and counted 18 poo bags at the bottom of the slip down to the beach!” she said.

“Can’t we as a town council ourselves put a bin down there just over the winter months?” continued Clr. Mrs. Brown.

Clr. Mike Evans explained that PCC didn’t assign anyone to clean the beaches over the winter months.

Clr. Trevor Hallett said that he hoped the signage would ‘educate’ people to use the bins.
