A call for Narberth Town Council to spearhead a campaign to purchase the town's former primary school for community use has been made this week.
Clr. Henry Langen asked his fellow town council colleagues to consider applying for a loan to buy half of the Moorfield Road building and turn it into a council chamber and office, and encourage the county council to take over the remainder of the property and open a state-of-the-art public library.
"This could be the last chance we have to buy a property," Clr. Langen said at Tuesday night's monthly town council meeting.
"It would give us a lot more substance to have our own chamber and an office where our clerk could work and where people could come and deal directly with us," he continued.
"I am suggesting we spearhead this campaign alongside the Chamber of Trade and Narberth Future Forum and invite the county council to come on board.
"We've got a good chance to obtain a substantial loan to go in and take the building over and develop it," he added.
Members meanwhile will be meeting with Dr. Steven Jones, director of development at Pembrokeshire County Council, to discuss the future of the building with him directly themselves, while County Councillor Wynne Evans also revealed that he would be making an announcement on November 6 when he hoped to "say something positive".
FOOTNOTE: As reported in last week's issue, a 'pledge fund' has been opened in a bid to purchase the former primary school for community use. The idea was put forward by Henry Langen at a recent meeting of Narberth Future Forum and resulted in over £2,500 being pledged by the end of the meeting.
