Following the recent project start of the A40 improvement scheme on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government - public liaison officer, Phil Baker, took the opportunity to forge links with the local county primary school in Wiston; the majority of Robeston Wathen children attend the St. Aidans VA School.

Phil was welcomed by the deputy headteacher, Mrs. Davies, to address two year groups - the theme was 'keeping safe'.

With the summer holidays approaching, it was an ideal opportunity to highlight the dangers of playing on construction sites, even though they may look exciting places to play.

Following a brief introduction about Costain and the project, Phil demonstrated the PPE used on site and asked the pupils (ages nine to 11) why they had to be used.

The class was extremely attentive and were eager to take part, with dozens of hands in the air to answer the questions.

Later in the week, the Costain team of Jean Jones, Toby Bedford and Phil Baker, supported by Roger Sylvester, of construction skills, involved the same two groups in a team building exercise.

The youngsters were shown how to build small triangular based pyramids or tetrahedrons from simple dowels and elastic bands.

Each small structure was then linked to another to build ever-larger structures until the final pyramid was completed at almost 4m high.

The children were extremely excited when the task was complete and had shown how they could work well together to successfully finish the challenge.
