Whitland Male Choir began their concert season by singing on Good Friday at Templeton United Reformed Chapel.
After a busy few months of recording a new CD and then learning new material, it was a pleasure to get back to doing what they most enjoy doing -that of singing some good music in concert.
Soloist for the evening was Catrin Raymond, a sixth-form pupil at Ysgol Preseli. Catrin has a beautiful voice and is planning to further her studies in Cardiff in September.
The programme for the evening was of light music for the first half, followed by a second half of sacred music, bearing in mind the significance of the day in the Christian calendar.
Catrin followed this pattern beautifully by singing songs from the shows in the first half, and then in the second half, singing a beautiful setting of the Lord's Prayer by Eric Jones and an Easter hymn by Peterson.
Two new choristers also staged for their first time at this concert.
The choir's second outing of the year was the annual concert in the Town Hall, Whitland, where they sang to a capacity audience who enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere fostered by compere, Rev. Huw George.
Soloists for this concert were Llio Evans, a lovely young lady from North Wales, and Matthew Ioan-Sims from Neath. Both are graduates from the Royal College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, and are now following their dreams by furthering their careers on both stage and concert venues.
Both sang a variety of music from the shows, from opera and Welsh traditional songs.
The music team from Whitland of Juliet, MD, and Hefina, the choir's accomplished pianist, were in control for both concerts.
A week after the annual concert, the choir held their annual general meeting, where the retiring chairman, Barry Webb, handed over to his successor, Aubrey Davies, of Clynderwen. Ken Davies was voted in as vice-chairman, while Huw Jones was voted in as assistant secretary. The only other change to the officials of the choir was Martyn Davies, who has now been given the job of PRO.
Whitland choir rehearse on Thursdays in the Memorial Hall in Whitland, and will always welcome potential new members.
They also welcome any visitors to the area to listen to a rehearsal.
When they last met, they had a visit from a chorister of a male choir in Leicester staying in the area on holiday. After a few items, Juliet invited him to join in the baritone section as he knew some of the songs they were singing.
