Concern over litter overflow and fly-tipping by bins on an area of Tenby’s South Beach has led to local councillors asking for daily rubbish collections to be made in the area.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, the town clerk, Andrew Davies, said he had met with Tenby Infant School’s ‘Eco Warriors’ recently for a successful litter pick of the Jubilee Play Park, but they were left with a bigger task when they confronted an area by the South Beach.

“There were issues with people leaving a lot of rubbish by the bin by the Surf Link Club hut, and concerns that it was causing pollution to their equipment,” said Mr. Davies, explaining that he had forwarded photos to Pembrokeshire County Council’s environmental maintenance manager, Glenville Codd.

“It was concerning that it appeared to be trade waste or domestic rubbish that was dumped, so PCC’s fly-tipping officer has been tasked with looking through the bags,” he continued.

Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown told her colleagues that the area had become a problem for litter.

“How can we encourage children and people to join the Surf Link Club when the bins next to the facility stink!” she remarked.

She pointed out that there was frequently a problem with non-collection of the rubbish from litter bins in that area, with one bin on the slipway down to the beach not emptied for several days over a busy period.

“Five days of stinking rubbish, which is a bit much for the South Beach! They should be emptied in that area every day, and I’d also propose more bins for the slipway.

“I read a story in a national newspaper where a man had walked around his local village collecting rubbish and when he took it to the tip they wouldn’t accept it because it was not his own and it could be contaminated. The country is going loopy!” added Clr. Mrs. Brown.

The Mayor, Clr. Paul Rapi, asked if a letter could be written to PCC pointng out councillors’ concerns.

“Things like this are not particularly helpful as a tourist town, and especially as a health and safety issue for those attending the Surf Link Club,” he remarked.
