A World War Two veteran from Pembroke Dock was inundated with Christmas cards following a friend’s festive Facebook campaign.
Author Mark Llewhellin, a former Army Commando, from Haverfordwest, met ninety-three-year-old Ted Owens, a former Royal Marines Commando, a year ago when he interviewed him.
After Mr. Llewehellin’s plea on his Facebook page for people to send Ted cards over Christmas to stop him feeling lonely, the war hero, who joined the Royal Marines when he was aged 18, said that said he spent over three hours opening dozens of cards!
Ted was a member of 41 Royal Marine Commando which landed at Sword Beach in Normandy on D-Day.
He was badly wounded and sent home to hospital, but ten weeks later he returned to France and fought through Belgium and Holland.
Last year, Ted was awarded the Chevalier in the Ordre national de la Légion d’Honneur, one of France’s highest military decorations.
“Thank you to everyone that has reached out to Ted so he’s not lonely this Christmas,” said Mr. Llewehellin.
“He’s been bombarded and he’s even had a phone call from another Commando in Australia!” he added.
