There are new faces at one of Saundersfoot’s most popular pubs, The Old Chemist Inn.

Situated on The Strand, the pub is now run by Rita and Ollie Gibson and their family, who extend a warm welcome to customers old and new.

The family - with sons Eric, Ben and Jamie - have lived in Saundersfoot almost five years, having fallen in love with the village whilst on holiday from Ireland.

A self-employed builder previously, Ollie hails from Llansteffan, while Rita is Norwegian by birth.

“We had always been passionate about Saundersfoot and loved visiting The Chemist,” said Rita, who has experience in the pub industry having worked in pubs in London and Dublin. “When we saw this pub was on the market, we decided let’s do it, and here we are!”

The Old Chemist Inn is open seven days a week from 10 am - midnight, with meals available daily from 12 noon until 9 pm continuously - and this will be throughout the winter months too!

Chefs Debbie and Mark serve a traditional menu, with all dishes home-cooked using fresh local produce at reasonable prices.

Light bites at lunchtime include tastily filled jacket potatoes and baguettes, all served with house dressed garden salad and home-made coleslaw, while there’s also a choice of salads, plus hot daytime meals, including favourites like homemade lasagne, Hunters chicken, Old Chemist Inn fish pie, Old Chemist Inn burger and JD and coke glazed chicken fillet breast burger.

Children are welcome and there’s always a selection of kids meals whatever time of day you call.

In the evening, starters include garlic mushrooms, Atlantic prawn cocktail, chef’s paté, chicken caesar salad, olives to share and breaded deep fried brie, while for main courses, there’s some of the highly-recommended lunchtime dishes, plus Old Chemist Inn curry of the day, Cymru Old Chemist Inn burger, 8oz Welsh sirloin steak, 12oz Welsh rump steak, 16oz gammon steak and whole cajun chicken breast. And, of course, there’s always a choice of sauces and extras!

In addition, there’s always specials on offer, from seafood to game, and as the weather gets chillier, homemade cawl, soups, stews and pies.

But don’t forget to save room for pudding, as the mouth-watering homemade desserts are certainly not to be missed!

Sunday lunch is a speciality, with a choice of one, two or three courses, starting from £8.95. Main courses feature slow roasted silverside of beef with horseradish sauce, Yorkshire pudding and rich gravy, roast leg of Welsh lamb with mint sauce and rich gravy, roast leg of pork with sage and onion seasoning, apple sauce and rich gravy, Old Chemist Inn Glamorgan sausages with roasted red pepper sauce, grilled fillet of cod with a lemon butter sauce, all served with thyme scented roast potatoes, new potatoes, creamed leeks, Leigh’s famous battered cauliflower and fresh seasonal vegetables.

So what’s new since Rita and Ollie took over? Well, in addition to the revamped daily menu, this week saw the launch of a Tuesday senior club where senior citizens can enjoy a roast of the day and dessert, plus tea or coffee, for £9.95 from 4 pm, while from Friday, November 6, Tapas evenings will be held every Friday in the wine bar.

Christmas and New Year’s Eve menus are currently being planned for the festive season and will be available soon, so why not pop in and collect one when you are passing and have a drink with Rita and Ollie? The Christmas menu, available throughout the day and evening, will be from £14.99, while on December 31, there will be a four-course menu, including a glass of Prosecco, but please remember to book early to avoid disappointment.

The well-stocked bar at The Chemist features ales including Rev. James, Doombar, Speckled Hen, Cambrian and Worthington Creamflow, while lagers are Carling, Coors and Cobra on draught, Strongbow and Stowford Press ciders, plus bottled local ales and an extensive wine list, with house wines starting from £9.95 a bottle. And happy hour is from 4-6 pm nightly, with reduced prices on draught beers. The roaring log fire adds to the warm welcome in the bar.

Downstairs, the pub has a separate wine bar which is available for private functions for all occasions. Up to 30 guests can be catered for, with a hot or cold buffet available depending on requirements. What’s more, it’s also possible to hire just the room and the bar person for your function.

The pub also boasts a beer garden - with heaters for the chillier months - is dog friendly, plus, it’s one of the few places of its kind in Pembrokeshire that has access directly onto the beach!

Currently, the Rugby World Cup matches are being shown, with an extra TV in the wine bar, but once the sporting extravaganza is over, live entertainment will return after lunch on Sunday and Saturdays.

The Old Chemist Inn certainly has lots to offer customers - why not pop along and see for yourself. You’re sure not to be disappointed!
