Ensuring a surprise birthday party remains a surprise in a small village like Llanddewi Velfrey is far from easy, but 90-year-old Women's Institute member, Nancy Eynon, could not have been more shocked when hospitality and catering students at Pembrokeshire College suddenly appeared with a birthday cake and started singing 'Happy Birthday' to her during what she thought was a normal branch outing.
Members of Llanddewi Velfrey WI had been planning the event for two years and were pleased it was such a surprise for Nancy, who first joined the local WI branch in 1954 - before some of the current members had even been born.
The success of the branch throughout much of the past 50 years has owed much to the hard work and effort put in by Nancy, who was branch secretary for 33 years and who, at other times, undertook all of the branch officers' jobs. She also served on the WI county executive committee.
As well as receiving numerous gifts, Nancy was presented with a bouquet of flowers by members wanting to express their gratitude for her continuing hard work.
