A small Pembrokeshire community staged a unique relay race at the weekend in honour of its oldest resident.

Over 100 people stepped out for a fun marathon relay in Clunderwen to celebrate Bessie Phillips's 107th birthday.

Elizabeth (Bessie) Phillips passed the major birthday milestone on Saturday, February 12, at her home in the village.

To help her celebrate her big day, 107 runners, including Glamorgan cricketer Robert Croft, ran or walked a mile each from her front door to her local chapel.

The run also helped raise money in aid of Bessie's great, great-nephew Jacob Thomas from Bethesda, who is training for the 2012 Paralympics.

The relay runners and walkers started out at midnight on Friday and kept going until 6 pm on the following day.

They included young toddlers in pushchairs to older residents in their '80s.

"It's not every day that one of our community members gets to be 107," said her local county councillor, Clr. Huw George, who is also Minister at Blaenconin Baptist Chapel.

"She's a remarkable lady and it's a remarkable achievement which we wanted to celebrate in a unique way."

The former tailoress was born and bred in the village, where she still lives supported by her daughter Sadie and her family.

Bessie, who enjoys watching snooker bowls and darts on the TV, is the village's oldest resident and the oldest member of Blaenconin Baptist Chapel.

Clr. John George, chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, visited Bessie at her home to help her celebrate her big day.
